The first half of 2025 has marked a historic milestone for solar energy in the UK. According to a recent analysis by the clean energy think tank Ember, solar generation surged by 32% year-on-year, reaching a record 9.91 TWh during the first six months.
This impressive rise reflects not only one of the sunniest periods on record but also a sharp ramp-up in solar installations. Data reveals that H1 2025 saw the addition of over 2 GW of solar PV capacity — nearly matching the total for all of 2024 and marking the strongest opening half-year in over a decade.
Solar energy also delivered an instant record: on July 8, the grid hit its highest ever instantaneous solar output of 14 GW, a staggering 44% increase over the past five years.
Complementing Ember’s findings, the UK government's Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) reported 22,406 new PV installations in July 2025, adding roughly 106 MW of capacity — the fourth-highest monthly total recorded. This brings the total installed capacity to around 19.1 GW across 1.8 million installations, with 18.7 GW situated in Great Britain (excluding Northern Ireland).
Notably, 42% of the UK’s solar capacity, approximately 8.1 GW, originates from ground-mounted solar farms. Among these, 15 projects supported by Contracts for Difference (CfD) were active, with 13 launching in 2025, signaling a clear policy-driven shift toward utility-scale solar.
Meanwhile, residential solar installations are scaling up. Systems between 4 kW and 10 kW have seen nearly equal capacity additions this year as those under 4 kW — a contrast to the smaller-scale installations that were typical under previous subsidy regimes.
