Italy Adds 4.83 GW of Solar Capacity in First Nine Months of 2026

Italy Adds 4.83 GW of Solar Capacity in First Nine Months of 2026

October 27, 2026

Italy connected 4.83 GW of new solar capacity to the grid in the first nine months of 2026, bringing its cumulative installed capacity to 48.35 GW by the end of September. Utility-scale projects accounted for 46% of new installations, while the country's cumulative battery storage capacity reached nearly 20 GWh, according to the latest data from Italia Solare.

The Italian solar industry association reported that Italy added 147,632 new solar installations during the first nine months of 2026, compared with 161,962 installations totaling 4.08 GW during the same period in 2025.

By the end of September, Italy had a total of 2,314,113 solar installations with a combined capacity of 48.35 GW.

The figures are based on Italia Solare's analysis of the Gaudì database managed by Italian grid operator Terna, covering solar and storage systems connected to the grid through the third quarter of 2026.

In the third quarter alone, Italy added 1.74 GW of solar capacity, up 5% from 1.65 GW in the second quarter and 37% from 1.27 GW in the third quarter of 2025. The number of new grid connections also increased by 51% quarter on quarter, from 38,660 to 58,459.

The data shows that Italy's solar market continued to expand in the third quarter, with utility-scale projects making the largest contribution to new capacity.

Utility-Scale Solar Accounts for 46% of New Capacity

Utility-scale projects led Italy's solar market in the first nine months of 2026, adding 2.24 GW across 473 installations, or around 46% of total new capacity.

The commercial and industrial (C&I) segment followed with 1.70 GW across 11,905 installations, accounting for 35% of new capacity. Residential systems of up to 20 kW added 897 MW across 135,254 installations, representing approximately 19% of the total.

All three segments recorded year-on-year growth in the third quarter.

Utility-scale projects of 1 MW and above added 858 MW, up 88% from 457 MW in the same quarter of 2025. Projects ranging from 1 MW to 10 MW contributed 394 MW, while installations above 10 MW accounted for 464 MW.

The C&I segment added 543 MW, compared with 500 MW a year earlier, representing 9% growth. Residential installations reached 341 MW, up from 312 MW in the third quarter of 2025, also an increase of around 9%.

These figures highlight the continued role of large-scale projects in driving capacity growth, alongside steady expansion in the residential and C&I segments.

Sicily Leads in New Capacity, While Lombardy Tops Installation Numbers

Sicily recorded the highest new solar capacity in Italy during the first nine months of 2026, adding 686 MW. Lombardy followed with 644 MW, ahead of Piedmont at 498 MW, Veneto at 463 MW, Emilia-Romagna at 443 MW, and Lazio at 432 MW.

Sicily's leading position was largely driven by utility-scale development. Of its 686 MW of new capacity, 476 MW came from projects larger than 10 MW.

Lombardy, by contrast, saw strong activity in the C&I segment, which contributed 405 MW of its new capacity. The region also led the country in the number of new grid connections, with 22,999 installations, followed by Veneto with 18,099, Emilia-Romagna with 13,405, and Sicily with 11,653.

The regional figures highlight different development patterns across Italy. Southern regions are seeing stronger growth from large-scale solar projects, while smaller C&I installations account for a significant share of new connections in the north.

Battery Storage Capacity Approaches 20 GWh

According to Italia Solare, Italy's cumulative grid-connected battery storage capacity reached 19.98 GWh, with a total power capacity of 8.34 GW, by the end of September 2026.

The country had 984,829 grid-connected storage systems at the end of the reporting period. Of the total energy storage capacity, 12.55 GWh was paired with solar installations, while 7.37 GWh came from standalone storage systems.

During the first nine months of 2026, Italy added 1.95 GWh of battery storage capacity and 907 MW of power capacity, across 98,197 new installations. Almost all new systems by number were paired with solar PV, accounting for 98,186 installations, 1.49 GWh of capacity, and 773 MW of power.

Standalone storage accounted for just 11 new installations but contributed 467 MWh of energy capacity and 134 MW of power capacity.

In the third quarter, solar-paired storage added 480 MWh of capacity and 252 MW of power across 31,039 installations. Compared with the second quarter, new connected storage capacity fell by 5%, power capacity declined by 10%, and installation numbers decreased by 6%.

However, compared with the 417 MWh added in the third quarter of 2025, solar-paired storage capacity increased by 15% year on year. The number of installations fell by around 5%, from 32,697 to 31,039.

During the first nine months of 2026, storage systems paired with solar installations of up to 6 kW contributed 481 MWh of new capacity. Systems paired with PV installations ranging from 6 kW to 20 kW added 596 MWh, while those paired with systems above 20 kW contributed 409 MWh.
